Welcome to my Travelogues and Collection of Photographs

World map from Nations Online Project

Updated  28th Mar 2015

This website was constructed with the sole purpose of sharing travel experiences. Please browse through my pages and remember to bookmark this site for a later date. More photos and articles will always follow.

My name is Mike and it has been my good fortune to be able to pursue my passions for travel and photography and to write about my experiences. Family and friends have long suggested (or rather nagged) that I should set up a website in order to share my experiences … so here it is. Some of the articles are long, some are short; depending on how much I had to say. I welcome constructive criticism, comments or corrections.

I have been inspired and motivated by a famous quote from the author Mark Twain

“20 years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than the ones you do. So throw off the bowlines, sail away from the safe harbour, catch the trade winds in your sails, explore, dream, discover.”

Most of my holiday destinations are the result of my dual fascination with ancient cultures and religious architecture. Whilst it’s these factors that initiate the decision to visit a country, it’s invariably the human contact with the locals that leaves an indelible impression on me and a better understanding of their culture. In the articles I have included, where possible, a reasonable element of historical background and a diary of the various sites visited.  I have also included some of my most memorable chance encounters along the way. Some of the destinations are somewhat off the tourist track and for that reason they tend to throw up some of the most rewarding and surprising experiences. Making friendships and accumulating enduring travel memories are the true legacy.

It is my hope that the various articles and photographs herein may provide you with an insight into the various places I have visited and convey the enjoyment I have been lucky enough to experience. Perhaps you may be inspired to add some of these places to your “must see” holiday list?  Perhaps these articles will help you with your school or educational project?
